Jamaica and India are exploring new areas for cooperation following a meeting of their Prime Ministers, Andrew Holness and Narendra Modi, in the Indian capital on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Holness expects closer collaboration in several areas, including medical tourism, sports and the lucrative film sector.

“Jamaica recently established a film fund which signals the government’s intent to support film makers in Jamaica. We acknowledge the tremendous success of Bollywood and we look  forward to collaboration between the Indian film industry and hundreds of film makers in Jamaica,” he said.

Prime Minister Holness is on a four-day visit to India which has already seen the opening of new offices for Jamaica’s High Commission in New Delhi, and renaming of the adjoining street, Jamaica Road.

The Caribbean island earlier this year launched the Jamaica Screen Development Initiative (JSDI) with a budget of J$1 billion (US$6.3 million) to increase the production of high quality, commercially viable, Jamaican content for both local and international audiences.
