The government of the Cayman Islands was on the brink of collapse after three Cabinet Ministers and a parliamentary secretary resigned on Thursday 31 October, leaving the ruling coalition without a majority.
The walk out was led by Deputy Premier Andre Ebanks and included the Health and Climate Resiliency Ministers.
Ebanks said their position had become untenable after several months of dysfunction, disorganisation and a lack of professionalism, which he said put the country at risk of erroneous decision-making and reputational damage, with long term adverse consequences.
The departure of the four leaves Premier Juliana O’Connor Connolly’s United People’s Movement ‘three-members short of the majority needed to govern.
The Premier was in meetings on Thursday with Governor Jane Owen about the way forward.
Observers say Premier Connolly may opt to run a minority government until the next elections by April next year, or try to form a new coalition with members of the opposition.
The Governor may also decide to call an early election
