Haitian Prime Minister, Gary Conille says his administration has allocated 24 percent of the country’s budget to education and he promised to make every effort to get children out of the clutches of gangs and placed in schools.

He said the Ministry of Education has the largest budgetary allocation for 2024-2025- an increase by 24 percent- to engage and train more young teachers, distribute more books, strengthen school canteens, among other initiatives. He added that all civil servants would receive two months bonus for joining the school system. “We are not satisfied until all children have the same chance to go to school from the first day, everywhere in the country,” Mr Conille said on ‘X’, formerly Twitter. This year, the start of the school year coincides with the new fiscal year.

In a separate post, the Haitian Prime Minister asked the national and international community to stand in solidarity with Haitian students for a successful 2024-2025 academic year. In that regard, he pledged that every effort would be made to release children from hangs so that they could pursue an education. “I have a special thought for the children who will not be able to go to school at the start of the school year because they are taken hostage by criminal groups. I want to take this opportunity to tell his children and their parents that the government that I lead remains supportive of their situation and promises to do everything possible to create the material and environmental conditions conducive to their education,” he said.

Prime Minister Conille said that even in times of war, the “school must be a sacred and inviolable space”. The Prime Minister made that statement during a visit to the LycĂ©e des Jeunes Filles, at Chemin des Dalles, in Downtown Port-au-Prince, on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, on the occasion of the opening of the academic year 2024-2025.👇🏾

He also said education and quality work for the youth is one of the government’s priorities to create hope and fight insecurity.

He said in terms of education, there must be no room for disparity. “The government understands this and gets to work every day. Happy back-to-school to all the children of my country and happy fiscal year to everyone.”
